Access Statement

Our accessibility statement is supplied to communicate the facilities on & of the park and the local area to people having Visual, audio and Mobility disabilities.

The location

Sun Haven Valley sits on the sloping side of a small picturesque valley in Cornish countryside.
The road running East to West along the south (entrance) side of the site follows the contours with a moderate gradient & the campsite grounds along the floor of the valley are level but the road connecting the two areas, running South to North is on a steeply sloping hillside (gradient up to 1 in 8) which has to be negotiated from the campsite to reach the shop, reception, park entrance, public phone, bus stop and second toilet block.
Bicycles, scooters, roller skates and the like are banned from our entrance road for reasons of safety. The campsite's shower block is set up the hill from the campsite & is reached by a concrete pathway with a gradient of 1 in 6 leading to a colonnade of reinforced concrete columns at a spacing of 940mm.

Holiday Caravans

We note that because of the gradients on the roads within our valley we have made our park accessible to all by the provision of a "disabled-access" holiday caravan at the top (level section) of our park. The Willerby Westmorland "Wheelchair Access" caravan (see pictures of No 35) is a standard Westmorland caravan (our most popular van) but wih a series of modifications that ease occupation by wheelchair users - wider doorways, low level sink, ramp access etc. This is a 35ft 2 bedroomed unit in which the lounge folding bed can be used in order that the van can sleep a maximum of 6 people and in which pets are allowed.

Campsite Bathroom Facilities

At present we have no dedicated bathroom facilities for wheelchair users though one of the seperate & lockable family bathrooms ( usually hirable) has partial facilities, but these can only be dedicated to a single camping group "out-of-season" and when pre-arranged. Due to the fact that we are in a valley, the toilet/bathroom block is built away the valley floor - presumably to leave the camping area open - and the block is consequently on the hillside and is only accessible from the campsite up a small (15 - 20m ramp) on a 1 in 5 slope; through a "corridor" of reinforced concerte pillars at 920mm spacing and down a short 150mm ramp. The shower facilities are a separate lockable bathroom into which two people, or a family can go. The door width is 880mm and there is a 240mm step up into the shower. The bath is a standard household-type bath. The wc has grab rails to assist in sitting and rising and the shower has a seat and grab rails. There is no alarm system. The facilities are also available to others and we therefore run a first-come first-served reservation system, which has to be "booked" in 45 minute slots (but can be prebooked for periods your whole stay). Plans are afoot for an extension to the bathroom block to create dedicated facilities.

Booking

Booking can be done personally by phone during standard office hours, or by email or by fax.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

( Please see the site plan )

The main road running into the site has a 20m level section for parking outside of reception but then has a 1:8 gradient towards the campsite before tuning through 90 degrees at the fountain. There is then a short level section before a left hand turn and a 1:6 gradient down o the campsite.

The campsite roads are 3m wide level tarmac roads with a one-way system. There is a 5mph speed limit.
Parking on the campsite is on the pitch where space allows. During Whitsun & the main summer season if there are 2 vehicles the 2nd vehicle may have to be parked at reception or on neighbouring land. Parking for static caravans Nos 1 - 23 and 30-35 is adjacent to or at the end of the caravan. Nos 24 - 29 will involve a short walk from the car.

Reception

Our main reception is a small area, entrance to which involves negotiating two small steps & a 700mm doorway but staff will be happy to come outside to help those who cannot enter the building.

TV room & Games room

The campsite TV room has to be accessed by 3 no 250mm steps & the TV room by a pathway with 1m width between the building wall & the retaining wall. The TV room is an open plan room with moveable furniture. The games room is more confined with large items of furniture ( pool table & games machines creating narrow accessways between them).

Public transport

The 556 Padstow – Newquay bus service runs past our gate, where the drivers will stop on a “request” basis. Bus quality varies and there are both single & double decker buses, both old and new. These will take you to Mawgan Porth beach, the village of St Mawgan, the airport, Wategate bay beach and Newquay.

Roads leading from the campsite.

The roads from the site are narrow Cornish lanes unsuitable for pedestrians & wheelchairs. There is a footpath along the valley side down to the beach, but much of it is through woodland & is negotiable to a rough terrain buggy but unsuitable for wheelchairs.

We have a small shop on site that sells bead, milk & a small selection of groceries & essentials. About ¾ mile to the West by road is the beachside area of Mawgan Porth with a restaurant, café, grocery shop & newsagent. The larger village of St Columb is 5 miles to the East and the town of Newquay is some 5 miles to the south. Both Tesco's and Asda's home delivery service can be used to deliver groceries to the park.

Doctors Dentists & emergency Services

The nearest out-of-hours accident/emergency unit is at Truro.

A list of telephone numbers for local services is posted in the telephone box reception including Taxi serves.

Mobile Phones

There are no mobile phone masts within sight of the park & phone signals are between poor & non-existent – the best usually being the “Orange” network & O2. There is a public telephone on the park. For people unable to use the phone box we are happy to lend a phone for “Emergency” or “In need” calls, to a doctor or similar.
