Getting to Cornwall

– have a look at the “summer getaways” tab on www.highways.gov.uk which will tell you about bottlenecks & planned roadworks (usually finalised each year in late May) as well as www.trafficengland.com – which is updated “real-time” traffic information

Getting to Sun Haven - the last leg
If you have a caravan we do strongly recommend that you follow the directions at the bottom of the page. If your SATNAV takes you and caravan through the very pretty Cornish village of St Mawgan we wish you luck in reversing back up the hill, and if it brings you in off the A39 be warned you have five miles of Cornish lanes to endure ( with oncoming buses who don’t reverse – they claim for insurance reasons !). If you take our recommended route past the airport and through Mawgan Porth there are two sharp bends to take carefully & a half mile of Cornish lane ( we are in ‘remote’ Cornish countryside and we hope you are coming mainly because we DON’T have a dual carriageway to our doorstep ) – & if you call us we can tell you what time the hourly bus will be travelling that last half mile. You can reconnoitre the alternatives later but very few people disagree with us. In a car, many SATNAV’s see our postcode as down the narrow lane alongside the campsite – once you can see our chalets look for the double width entrance with a 13 foot decorative metal arch on the road to/from Mawgan Porth beach.

Our recommended route
Follow the A30 down past Bodmin to the Newquay turn-off.

Take the off-ramp at the “Highgate Hill” junction, signposted Newquay A392 & Wadebridge A39, to join the roundabout underneath the A30. Turn right, taking the A39 towards Wadebridge.

At the next roundabout ¾ mile on, again follow the A39 towards Wadebridge.

At the next roundabout 2 miles on, turn left on the A3059 towards Newquay

Some 2¾ miles on, just past the garage ( still there in 2009) turn right on the B3276 towards St. Mawgan, Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay.

Drive on to the T-junction (2¾ miles on ) & turn right on the B3276 towards Mawgan Porth & Padstow.

Follow the road & you will go downhill & round a sharp turn into Mawgan Porth at beach level.

Cross the bridge and a hundred yard or so further on, just before you start to climb the hill there is right turn ( Chapel Road) that leads inland away from the sea. This is the only road leading inland from Mawgan Porth beach. Turn right into this, with the crazy golf course/pitch & putt on your left.

A quarter mile further on you will pass through a very sharp ‘S’ bend and we are half a mile beyond that on the left. Please note that this last half mile is a "Cornish lane with "Cornish Hedges" ( 6ft stone walls covered with turf) and this is effectively a single way road with passing places. We note that the local bus company travels it hourly in single deckers & once a day with a double decker bus. If you call us we can tell you what time the hourly bus will be travelling that last half mile

We are on the left hand side of the road – a double width entrance with a thirteen foot arch over it supported by stone pillars, so if you are in the right place it’s difficult to miss.

Reception is just inside the gate on the left. We look forward to seeing you and hope you have a pleasant journey!

Alternative route, for local traffic, coin in from Newquay along the coast road travelling South to North ( Newquay to Padstow direction)
Follow the A30 down past Bodmin to the Newquay turn-off.

From the A3059 ( Henver Road) , at the “double roundabout” turn North on the B3276 signposted Porth Beach.
Follow this coastal road past Porth Beach, along to Watergate Bay & the next Bay is going to be Mawgan Porth.
